Though it’s becoming relatively less frequent as I grow older, my mind has always been the most numb with thoughts at night. They would overlap with each other, argue with each other, talk to me, sing to me, and before I knew it, it would be two a.m. in the morning.
Every night, I would watch my sister in the bed beside me sleeping so blissfully – and what’s more, so easily – that I couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration but also frustration in the same time.
How does she do that? Why can’t I do the same?
I would feel quite alone at night.
It felt like I was the only one struggling to sleep, with everyone else in my house in complete silence. I would stare at my Cinderella-patterned wallpapered ceiling for hours, like watching paint dry…..

Don’t you worry, there are thousands around the world awake, trying to fall asleep, at this hour too 🙂

What a great poem! The last 5 lines are so good there is a simple power in my opinion. Not a word wasted and the point is driven home. Keep writing cause you’re awesome!

Thank you so much!! I’m glad that you feel that way about the poem :))
Was just checking out your most recent poem actually, the one about rain, and I found it so stimulating!! Your comments about how rain reflects how much society’s changed really hit me!

I loved the poem! I felt like it really had the power to paint images in my head and that was awesome and it definitely captured the feeling of being unable to sleep. Your introduction to the poem, too, really added something to my experience of reading it and that was really cool!

Ahhhh thank you so much! Glad that you liked it 🙂 I made the beginning of the poem ‘fairytale’ based since I wanted to show how a child would view their inability to sleep, and the end of the poem could be read as how one can still suffer from insomnia as they grow older! So I wanted to remind the readers not only are they not alone in late nights, but also that if they’ve been facing this since childhood, they’re not alone either!
